DAVENPORT — William J. “Bill” McGill, 57, of Davenport, passed away peacefully at home, November 15, 2011.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, November 20, 2011, at The Runge Mortuary. Per his wishes cremation rites have been accorded. Out of respect for Bill, the family requests that the gathering be a blue jeans and t-shirt affair. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rungemortuary.com.
Bill was born on December 23, 1953, to Bob and Evalyn (Pauling) McGill in Davenport, Iowa. Bill graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1972 and soon after began a life-long career as a mechanic, specializing in foreign cars. He loved restoring old Harley Davidsons and could be found at swap meets throughout the Midwest looking for that special deal. There wasn’t anything Bill couldn’t fix and was often helping friends, family, and neighbors with his talent. He was also an amateur Ham Radio operator, a hobby from when he was a teen, and had friends all over the world. Though Bill never married, he loved and helped raise three wonderful kids with his longtime girlfriend, Vera Johnson.
Bill is survived by his mother, Evalyn McGill, a brother, Ed (Sheranne) McGill, nephew and nieces Nick, Celeste and Rachel McGill, great nephews and nieces, Ian, Xavier, Meadow and Aidan, all of Mountain Home, Arkansas; sister, Coleen (Darrell) McKittrick, and nephews, Kyle and Sean McKittrick of Davenport; his “kids,” Brian Buchanan and Mikie Rump of Davenport and Heather Bo of Eldridge; his “grandkids,” Michael, Amanda, Sammy, Will and Melissa; and finally his faithful dog and constant companion , Sheila.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert R. McGill, his maternal grandparents, Fred and Ethel Pauling, and his paternal grandparents, Paul and Edna McGill. From QC Times November 19.2011
